How to Plan a Second Line Parade for Your New Orleans Elopement
You came to New Orleans for the soul, right? The kind of joy that spills out of the streets, wrapped in brass and secondhand feathers?
Then you need a second line parade.
If you’re eloping in New Orleans, this is the moment you don’t skip. Second lines are loud, joyful, and beautifully chaotic—and they turn your wedding into a citywide celebration.
What Is a Second Line?
It’s one of New Orleans' most iconic traditions. A brass band leads the way (that’s the “main line”) while the newlyweds dance behind them (the second line!), followed by anyone who wants to join—waving parasols, twirling handkerchiefs, and grinning ear to ear.
What started with jazz funerals evolved into a living, breathing tradition of celebrating love, life, and community. And now, you’re part of it.
Why Couples Love a Second Line After Eloping
Second lining after your ceremony feels unreal. You’ll dance through the French Quarter with a band at your heels and strangers cheering like they’ve known you for years. Along with police escorts to stop traffic and lead you through your route!
- It's high energy without needing a big crowd
- It creates epic photos and even better memories
- It’s totally, unmistakably New Orleans
- You don’t need a reception to feel celebrated
- It’s more fun than any sparkler exit, hands down
How to Plan Your Second Line Parade
Don’t worry—we help with all of this inside our elopement packages. But if you’re curious about how it works, here’s the breakdown:
- Get Your Parade Permit: New Orleans requires a simple permit to parade through the streets. It’s affordable but must be submitted in advance. (We connect you with someone to take care of this when you book with us.)
- Book Your Brass Band: We know the best local bands—the ones who bring the party and know how to handle a wedding crowd. They’ll get the energy just right.
- Choose Your Route: Usually 2–5 blocks is plenty. Royal Street, Bourbon Street, or a quiet loop behind Jackson Square… each gives a different vibe. We’ll help you choose based on light, crowd flow, and photos.
- Bring the Props: You’ll want parasols, umbrellas, or handkerchiefs for dancing. Easy peasy through Amazon or Etsy (even locals make them, we'll tell you who!)
- Prep Your Photographer: A second line moves fast. Your New Orleans elopement photographer needs to be ready to run and shoot on the go. Good thing we are.
Second Line Etiquette (aka how to not look like a tourist)
- Tip your band. They’re working hard and making magic.
- Respect the neighborhood. Locals love second lines—but only when they’re done right.
- Hydrate. Dancing in the street is surprisingly sweaty.
When’s the Best Time to Do This?
Second lines happen year-round, but the sweet spot is October through April. The weather’s milder, the sun is golden, and the streets are easier to move through.
Avoid major festivals like Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest unless you want max chaos.

“Our second line down Royal Street was the best part of our elopement. We didn’t know what to expect, but people were cheering, dancing with us… I cried, laughed, and danced all in ten minutes. Thank you for making it happen!”

Don’t Forget the Afterparty…
Once your second line ends, the night’s not over.
- 🎷 Head to Frenchmen Street for live jazz
- 🍸 Sip classic cocktails at Carousel Bar
- 🍽️ Book an intimate dinner at one of NOLA’s world-famous restaurants (we’ll help with recs)
It’s the chef’s kiss to end your perfect day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a second line included in your elopement packages?
Yes! We assist with who will handle the permits, band, route planning, and timeline for you. Check out the packages here.
How long is a typical second line parade?
Usually around 10–20 minutes or 3–5 blocks. It’s short but unforgettable.
Do we need a lot of guests?
Not at all. Many of our couples second line with just themselves and a few friends—and it still feels big.
How early should we book it?
At least 30 days in advance is ideal. We can do it faster, but permits take time.
Can we do this on a weekday?
Absolutely. In fact, weekdays often mean less foot traffic and better flow.
